snow!
Dec 16, 2005
It snowed so much, so gently and so steadily, that you can see absolutely nothing of my car up to the top of its rims and everything above that only appears in blurs of blue between heavy weights of white. People are literally using shovels to get their cars out and I can’t see their footsteps in the snow, they’re so deep and so easily buried in more white.
But already the morning car rush begins to beat a resolute pathway through the snow, creating chevrons of slush to mark the places that will be further flattened by the shoes of the morning people rush.

I dreamt last night that it snowed, which is funny because I’ve never lived anywhere that it snowed. I’ve never been anywhere while it snowed either. All this talk of snow on weblogs and Flickr photos is getting to me. The cool part was that, in my dream, the snow was piled high and white on the sides of the street, but the street itself was a dark, smooth curve, perfectly defined by the yellow and white traffic lines. Really gorgeous contrast, and I was thinking, ‘Damn, that’s so cool, it snows everywhere but on the street. Wow, living somewhere other than California may not be so bad after all.’ Then I woke up and read your post, and decided slush doesn’t sound fun.

Well no, slush isn’t fun. It rates, in my book, as The Second Evil of winter, the First being black ice. Oh the horror that is black ice.
That said, that morning the world was entirely blanketed in white. Blanketed is exactly the right word, overused though it is. What you saw was rounded heaps of white, everywhere, on everything.
By afternoon the traffic and the tractors had done their bit, and the smoothness had melted into corpulent rivulets of grey and brown.
