Portrait of the Web Designer as a Young Student
Mar 22, 2006
It’s one of those things I do reflexively, like renewing my library books online. I turn on the computer, connect to the computer, click through a free-charity website, and check my stats. It’s not that I’m expecting much; it’s just a habit.
The thing about StatCounter is it generates graphs that scale to your numbers. So today, I had to blink when I saw a peak on the far left of the graph that had the rest of the graph hugging the x-axis.
CSS Mania, one of the site galleries I regularly turn to for inspiration, has listed this version of run.ltw, which makes me feel incredibly validated. I’ve been considering limiting myself entirely to webdesign for my summer job, both in-office and freelance, so it definitely helps my self-confidence that I now have concrete evidence of my ability that I can add to my resume.
Of course, in terms of looking for work, it would make more sense for my actual work site to be featured on a site gallery, but I can’t afford to redesign likethewind right now. Right now, the priority is getting through my final year of Life Sciences (and Queen’s …) with flying colours, and this involves perfecting my Middle English accent, completing the psychedelic mania that is Tristram Shandy, memorising sundry drug names and other related esoteric miscellany.
Plus, I’ve already got paid work that needs to be done.
So time is something I can’t afford to lavish on my site right now.
Still, this is great.
:D

well, congratulations! you have to teach me the ropes of css mastery one day.
I really like mint (www.haveamint.com) for stats. It’s locally hosted though & costs $30/domain. iaweek.ca ended up using it.

Congrats!
I’m using Mint as well – it’s great…

My site most definitely doesn’t warrant anything other than a free statcounter, but from what I’ve heard Mint is truly excellent. Should the day ever come when I need a really good statcounter, Mint it most definitely will be.
